Ariza - A Letter to the Imam of our time

Translation of Dua-e-Ariza

I have written to you O my master, may His mercy and blessing be on you, seeking a favour from you.

I have complained to you for what has happened to me seeking solutions firstly from Allah and then from you for a matter that has obsessed me.

I am helpless in combating the problem and for that I have resorted to seeking help from Allah and from you. Knowing the status you have with Allah.

I am confident that you will help me get the solutions to my problems swiftly and that you will intercede on my behalf. I am helpless and moreover I am sinful:

so help O master and present this problem to Allah and I pray to Him that He will solve this quickly and grant me victory and success in finding the solution to my problems.

I am not able to carry or bear with it. Although I am responsible for the increase of my sins and ignorant about my responsibilities (Wajibaats), from Allah which are given to me.

So help me O my master.  Peace be upon you during this time of problems and sorrow.

 presents my prayers to Allah before I compensate and before my enemies engulfs me. For you have shown me your blessings.

So I pray to Allah for great salvation and near victory with calmness from all fears,

 for Allah is most high and does what he wants. Allah is sufficient for me from beginning and in my hopes.

Whatever Allah wish there is neither strength nor any power except in Allah the High, the Great.

*When dropping the Ariza in the sea, we normally recite the following, addressing Husayn bin Rawh, the 3rd Na’ib of the 12th Imam:

“O Husayn bin Rawh, Salamun Alykum.

I bear witness that you died in the path of Allah and (hence), you are alive and are sustained by Allah.  am addressing you in your life which you lead with Allah – this is my note and wishes to the master of the Era, the 12th Imam (AS), so please hand it over to him for you are indeed trustworthy”.

Fast of Shabaan

Those A'mal which Prove helpful to pass over the poole serat easily

1. Sayyed ibne Tawoos in his book Iqbal relates that whoever recites twenty units (Rak'at) of prayers after Namaze Maghrib on the night of the first of Rajab, such that in each Rak'at after Surab-al -Hamd recites once Surah-al-Tawheed, then he and his family will be saved from the punishment in the grave, and will cross the poole Serat like lightening without any accounting. 
2. It is related that whoever fasts for six days in the month of Rajab will find peace in Qayamat, and will walk over the poole serat easily without been accounted. 
3. It is related that a person who recites ten units of Namaz on the night of twenty ninth Sha'ban, such that in each unit after Surah-al-Hamd recites ten times Surah-at-Takasur, Surah-an-Naas, Surah-al -Falaq, Surah-al-kaferoon, and Surah-at-Tawheed each, Allah will give him reward equal to theologians, and will increase his good deeds, will ease his accounting, and he will cross the poole Serat like lightening.  
4. As discussed in the earlier chapter, that whoever goes for pilgrimage to the shrine of Imam Ali-ar-Reza (A.S.), Imam (A.S.) Himself comes for his rescue (in Qayamat) at three different places and saves him from the terrors of that day one of which is the Bridge of Serat’.

Those A'mal which saves one from the Squeeze in the Grave.

There are many acts (A'amal) to save one from the squeeze in the grave, but for brevity's sake, I state here only seventeen of them.
(1) Amirul Mo'meneen Ali (A.S.) says, that a person who recites Surah-an-Nisa on every Friday will remain safe from the squeeze in the grave.
(2) It is narrated that if a person recites Surah-az- Zukhruf, Allah will save him from the reptiles of the earth, and the squeeze in the grave.
(3) A person who recites Surah-al-Qalam in Obligatory Prayers (Wajib Namaz) or Supererogatory Prayers (Nafela), will remain safe from this punishment.
(4) Imam Ja'far-as-Sadiq (A.S.) says, that if a person dies between the sunset of thursday and the sunset of friday, Allah will exempt him from this punishment.
(5) Imam Ali-ar-Reza (A.S.) says, that the Midnight Prayers (Namaze Shab) is recommended (sunnat) for you. So if a person gets up in the last part of the night and recites Namaze Shab, Allah will save him from the squeeze in the grave and grant him immunity from the fire of hell, and will increase his age and sustenance.
(6) The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.S.) says, that if a person recites Surah-at-Takasur before going to bed, Allah will grant him freedom from this punishment.
(7) If a person recites this supplication (dua') ten times daily will be saved from this punishment. (The du'a has already been quoted in Chapter - I under "Those A'mal which prove beneficial during death and eases it's tribulations").
(8) A person who is buried in Najafe Ashraf. Because the earth of that place has got the speciality, that a person buried there will be saved from the punishment in the grave, and will be exempted from the questioning by Munkir and Nakeer.
(9) To put Jareedatayn (two wet sticks or branches) along with the dead body in the grave. It is narrated that so long as the sticks remain wet, the dead person is saved from chastisement. It is related that once the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.S.) was passing by a grave on which Allah's wrath was descending. He called for a leafless branch. He cut it from between, wetted it with water, and kept one on the head of the grave and the other on the feet. It is also related that to sprinkle water on the grave is also beneficial, for so long as the mud of the grave remains wet, the dead person remains safe from the punishment in the grave.
(10) A person who recites ten units (Rak'at) of Namaz on the 1st of Rajab such that in every Rak'at after Surah al-Hamd recites three times Surah-at-Tawheed, will be saved from the squeeze in the grave. To recite twenty Raka'at Namaz on the night of 1st Rajab, such that in every Rak'at after Surah-al-Hamd recite once Surah-at-Tawheed is beneficial to save oneself from the punishment in the grave.
(11) To fast for four days in the month of Rajab or twelve days in the month of Sha'ban is also beneficial.
(12) To recite Surah-al-Mulk on the grave is an act which saves the dead man from the punishment in the grave. Allamah Qutubuddin Rawandi relates from Ibne Abbas, who says that once a person pitched a tent on a ground not knowing that there was a grave beneath. Thereafter he started reciting Surah-al-Mulk. Suddenly he heard a voice saying that the Surah gives salvation. He related this incident to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.S.), who replied that, "Verily this Surah frees a person from the punishment in the grave". Shaikh Kulanini also narrates from Imam Mohammad-al-Baqir (A.S.) who said that the recitation of Surah-al-Mulk saves one from the punishment in the grave.
(13) It is related from the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.S) in "Da'waat" of Allamah Qutubuddin Rawandi that, when a person is being buried and someone recites this supplication (du'a) thrice, the corpse will remain safe from the punishment in the grave till the day of Qayamat:

اللهم اني اسالك بحق محمد وال محمد ان لا تعذب هذا

(14) Shaikh Toosi in his `Misbahul Mutahajjid' relates the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.S.) as saying that, if a person recites the following two Rak'at Namaz on friday night, Allah will free him from the punishment in the grave, and save him from fear on the day of Qayamat. In each Rak'at after Surah- al-Hamd recite fifteen times Surah-az-Zilzal.
(15) To recite thirty Rak'at Namaz in the middle part of the month of Rajab, such that in each Rak'at after Surah-al- Hamd recite ten times Surah-al-Tawheed is beneficial to ward off punishment in the grave. In the same manner to recite the above Namaz on the night of 16th and 17th Rajab and the 1st of Sha'ban is also beneficial. On the night of the 1st of Sha'ban to recite 100 Rak'at Namaz, such that in each Rak'at after Surah-al-Hamd recite once Surah-at Tawheed, after ending the Namaz recite fifty times Surah at-Tawheed. On the night of 24th Sha'ban recite one hundred Rak'at Namaz, such that in each Rak'at after Surah-al-Hamd recite ten times Surah-an-Nasr. Also to recite fifty Rak'at Namaz such that in each Rak'at after Surah-al-Hamd recite fifty times Surah-at-Tawheed, fifty times Surah-al-Falaq, and 50 times Surah-an-Naas saves one from the punishment in the grave. To recite the same Namaz on the night of `Ashoora' (10th of Moharram) is also beneficial.
(16) To keep `Khake Shifa' (the mud of the grave of Imam Husain ( A.S.) in the shroud (kafan), or to rub it on the parts of prostration (Sajdah).
(17) It is narrated from Imam Ja'far-as-Sadiq (A.S.) in "Anware No'maniyyah" that if forty persons gather near the body and recite:

اللهم انا لا نعلم منه الا خيرا وانت اعلم به منا فاغفر له

Allah will safeguard the dead man from the punishment in the grave.
It is related from Imam Ja'far-as-Sadiq (A.S.) that there was a virtuous man in Bani Israil, regarding whom it was revealed to Prophet Dawood (A.S.) that he was a hypocrite (riyakar) When he died, Hazrat Dawood refrained from attending his funeral But forty other people attended his funeral and said:

اللهم انا لا نعلم منه الا خيرا وانت اعلم به منا فاغفر له
Then another forty came and repeated the same, for they were not aware of the hidden reality. Allah then revealed to Dawood (A.S.) and asked him as to why did he not attend his funeral? Hazrat Dawood answered, "O Lord! You said that the man was a hypocrite, and so I avoided his funeral". Allah said, "Verily it was true, but because forty persons bore witness to his goodness I forgave his sins". It is Allah's mercy and beneficence who thus forgave His servant with any trial or tribulation.
It is for this reason that the believers (mo'meneen) in the olden days kept their shrouds (kafan) with them, and would request other believers to write down their testimonies on it The sight of the shroud made them remember death and increase the fear of the hereafter. We too should follow this example and request other Mu'meneen to write down their testimonies on our shrouds, and preserve it with us, so that we are always reminded of the hereafter

On 13th Shabaan, the ashurkhana is been washed, painted, and repaired; with fairy lights hung everywhere.

The Brilliance of the Month of Shabaan

It is narrated from Ibn Abbas that the companions of the Holy Prophet (saw) were discussing the brilliance of the month of shabaan. The Holy Prophet (saw) said, "This is a blessed month and my month. The people of Heavens consider it holy and honor it. The earnings of the believers are increased during this month for the month Ramadhan and the gardens of Paradise are decorated for them. It is called shabaan because of the earnings of believers are increased in it. The deeds performed in this month are counted multiples of seventy. Calamities end, sins are wiped off, good deeds are accepted and Allah becomes proud of His slaves in this month. He sees who fast and worship Him from Divine throne and expresses His Pride in front of the people of Heaven."

Imam Ali (a.s) stood up and asked, "O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be scarified for you, please narrate some excellence of fasting in the month of shabaan so that we are motivated to fast and perform Allah's worship and stay a wake during nights."

Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) says, "My father used to take a day's gap between the fasts of the months of Shabaan and Ramadan. However Imam Zainul Abideen (a.s) used to fast for two months continuously and used to say, 'Fasting for these two months continuously is like repenting before Allah. These are the months of Allah and they compensate for the sins of the two months of past and present each."

Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s) says, "The Holy Prophet (a.s) used to fast in the months of Shaban and Ramadan continuously. However he used to stop people from doing so. These are the months of Allah and they compensate for the sins of previous and next months."

The Holy Prophet (saw) said, "One who fasts for one day in shabaan, Allah writes for him seventy rewards and each reward will be equal to that of worshipping Allah for a year. One who fasts for two days, He would save him from those sins, which destroy a person. One who fasts for three days, his position in Paradise would increase by seventy levels with pearls and rubies. One who fasts for four days in paradise his earnings would increase greatly. One who fasts for five days would be loved by the people. One who fasts for six days Allah would keep away seventy types of calamities from him. One who fasts for seven days, he would remain safe from the mischief and evil thoughts of Satan and his gangs. One who fasts for eight days won't go thirsty from this world and would be satisfied by a pure cistern. One who fasts for nine days, Munkir and Nakir would be lenient with him while questioning in the grave. One who fasts for ten days, his grave would expand by seventy spans. One who fasts for eleven days his grave would be lit up by eleven minarets of lights. One who fasts for twelve days, seventy thousand angels would visit his grave every day till the day of Judgment. One who fasts for thirteen days angels of all seven heavens would repent for him. One who fasts for fourteen days a;; the terrestrial and aquatic animals will be ordered to seek forgiveness for him. One who fasts for fifteen days, the Almighty Allah calls out, 'I assure you by My Honor that I won't burn you in the fire of hell.' One who fasts for sixteen days, seventy rivers of fire will be extinguished for him. One who fasts for seventeen days all the doors of the hell would be closed for him. One who fasts for eighteen days on Shabaan all the doors of paradise would be opened for him. One who fasts for nineteen days would be given seventy thousand palaces made of pearls and rubies in paradise. One who fasts for twenty days would be married to seventy thousand hoorul ein. One who fasts for twenty one days angels would congratulate him and keep moving their wings on his body. One who fasts for twenty two days would be made to wear seventy thousand dresses made of satin and brocade. One who fasts for twenty three days would be made to sit on a bright mount and roam throughout paradise. One who fasts for twenty four days would intercede for seventy thousand people who believed in the oneness of Allah. One who fasts for twenty five days hypocrisy would be kept away from him. One who fasts for twenty six days Allah would give him permit to pass through the sirat bridge. One who fasts for twenty seven days Allah orders to give him freedom from hell. One who fasts for twenty eight days his face would be illuminated and light would emanate from his face. One who fasts for twenty nine days Almighty Allah would please him. One who fasts for thirty days in shabaan Jibrael (a.s) would stand in front of Divine Throne and call out, 'O person! your deeds have a new beginning for your past sins have been forgiven.' Almighty Allah would say, 'I would forgive you even if the number of your sins is equal to the number of stars in the skies, or drops of rain, or leaves of tress, or grains of sand, or drops dew or number of days of the world. This reward and forgiveness for fasting in the month of shabaan is not much for Allah. ' "
Ibne Abbas says that this reward is for the month of shabaan only.

Shabaan

The holy month of Shabaan is called "Shaban" because the earnings of believers are increased in it.

Reward of a fast in the month of Shabaan

Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) says, 'One who fast continuously from shaban to the month of ramdhan then by Allah, these fasts would be counted among repentance of Allah, the Might and Sublime.'

The narrator says that he heard Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) say, 'one who fasts on first of shaban then surely, Paradise would be made obligatory for him. If he observes two fasts, the Almighty Allah would look at him with mercy in this world every day and night. He would also shower His mercy on him in Paradise. One who fasts for three days would get to visit Allah daily on the Divine throne in Paradise.'

It is narrated from Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) that he said, 'By Allah, the fasts of shaban and Mahe Ramdhan are like repenting before Allah.'

The Holy Prophet (saw) was asked, 'Which fast is supreme?' He said, 'The fasts of Shaban for the welcoming of Mahe Ramadhan.'

Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s) says, 'One who observes fast in shaban it would keep him away from every defect and anger.' Abu Hamza says, 'I asked the Imam as to what he meant by that defect.' Imam replied, 'It is the oath of Allah's disobedience.' I asked, 'What is the meaning of that anger?' He replied, 'Taking an oath out of anger and then repenting it.'

The narrator says that a discussion of the fast of the month of shaban was held with Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s). Imam went on narrating the excellence of this fast until he said, 'The fast of shaban would benefit him a lot; even if he has murdered a respected person he would be forgiven."

Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) narrates that the Holy Prophet (saw) said, 'Shaban in my month and Mahe ramadan is the month of Allah. it is the spring for the poor. The Almighty Allah has made Eid-ul-Azha so that the poor get to eat meat and hence you should perform Qurbani and offer meat to them."

SHA’BAAN - The great spiritual blessing

The Holy Prophet said Sha’baan is my month”.
Imam Ali bin Husayn Al Zaynul Aabideen (A.S.) told his companions: “The Holy Prophet (Saww) used to observe fast during the whole month of Sha’baan. Therefore whosoever, in love of the Holy Prophet (S.A.), wishes to seek nearness to Allah and receive bounties, favours and rewards in this world and in the Hereafter, must connect Sha'baan with Ramadhan (in the matter of fasting and special prayers). 1) It is highly desirable to observe fast on 1st, 2nd and 3rd of Sha’baan, &  Pray a 2 Rak-a’t Namaaz every night  In every Rak-a’t, after the recitation of Soorah Al Faatih’ah, recite Soorah Al Ikhlaas 11 times.. 2) Give Alms/Charity  in HIS name “What are the best deeds that should be done in Sha`ban.” The Imam (a.s) answered, “Alms giving and seeking forgiveness are the best deeds in Sha`ban. Verily, if anyone of you gives alms in Sha`ban, Almighty Allah will breed that alms in the very same way as you breed your small camels. Hence, this alms will be as huge as Mount Uhud on the Resurrection Day.” (use www.Eternal-Investment.org )
3) Recite 70 times daily: ASTAGHFIRULLAAHALLAD’EE LAA ILAAHA ILLA HUWAR RAHMANO RAH’EEMUL H’AYYUL QAYYOOMU WA ATOOBU ILAYHI According to narrations, the best supplications and invocations that are advisably recited in Sha`baan are the prayers of seeking forgiveness of Almighty Allah (swt) (i.e. istighfar). Hence, to seek Almighty Allah’s (swt) forgiveness seventy times a day in Sha`baan is equal to seeking His forgiveness seventy Thousand times a day in the other months 4) Recite the following 1000 times, whenever the count reaches 1000, at any time within the month, the a’mal is complete: LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAAHU  WA LAA NAA’-BUDU ILLAA IYYAAHU MUKHLIS’EENA LAHUD DEEN WA LAW KARIHAL MUSHRIKOON
5) On every Thursday Fasting is recommended & Recite 2 Rak-a’t Namaaz. In every Rak-a’t, after the recitation of Soorah Al Fatih’a, recite Soorah Al Ikhlaas 100 times. After the Salaam recite Salawaat 100 times  اللّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ In this respect, a Hadith reads that the heavens decorate themselves each Thursday in Sha`ban and the angels pray Almighty Allah, saying, “O our God: (please do) forgive him who observes fasting on this day and respond to his prayers.” The Holy Prophet (saww) is also reported as saying, “If one observe fasting each Monday and Thursday in Sha`baan, Almighty Allah will settle forty of his needs— twenty appertained to the worldly life and twenty to the Hereafter.” 6) Recite the Special Salawaat taught by Imam Ali bin Husayn Al Zaynul Aabideen (A.S.)  7) Recite Munajat e Shabaniyah with presence of heart.

Those deeds which are beneficial for warding off fear of the grave

One of them is performing Ruku' with entire recitation. Imam Mohammad-al-Baqir (A.S.) says, that a person reciting entire recitation of Ruku' in Namaz will be saved from the fear of the grave. And one who recites.

الاالله
الملك
الحق
المبين

100 times daily, will be saved from anxiety in the grave, will become prosperous, and the doors of Paradise will be opened for him. It is also related that the person who recites Surah-al-Yaseen before going to bed, and the following Namaz (Namaze Lay latur Raghaib), he will be saved from the terror of the grave. The first night of the month of Rajab is known as Laylatur Raghaib.
The Holy Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.S.) used to fast on the first thursday of the month of Rajab, and between Maghrib and Isha Prayers recite twelve Rak'at Namaz (in Si sets of two units) as under:
In every Rak'at after Surah-al-Hamd recite three times Surah-al-Qadr and twelve times Surah-an-Naas. After Salaam recite seventy times:

اللهم صل على محمد النبي الامي وعلى اله

Then go into prostration (Sajdah) and say seventy times:

سبوح قدوس رب الملائكة والروح
Then sit erect and say seventy times:

رب اغفر وارحم وتجاوز عما تعلم انك انت العلي الا عظم
 Then again go into Sajdah and say seventy times:

سبوح قدوس رب الملائكة والروح
 It has been related that a person who fasts for twelve days in the month of Sha'ban, Allah will send seventy thousand Angels daily to his grave. And if a person visits an ailing man, Allah appoints an Angel for him who accompanies him in his grave till Qayamat.
 Abu Sa'eed Khudri says, that he heard the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.S) telling Amirul Mo'mineen Ali (A.S.), "O Ali! Give glad tidings to your Shi'ahs that their death will be eased, and they will be saved from the terror of the grave and Qayamat".

Fasting in the last 3 days of Shabaan

Imam Jafer Sadiq (a.s.) reports that Prophet Mohammad (sawaw) has said that Shabaan is my month and Ramzan is the month of Allah (swt). Therefore, if anyone observers one day of fasting during Shabaan, I will do his/her "shafaat" on the day of judgment, and one who observers two days of fasting then his/her previous sins would be forgiven and if someone observers three days of fasting then it would be just like all the sins have been washed away. Imam Ali Riza (a.s.) has said that if someone observes fast during the last three days of Shabaan and combines them with the fasting during the month of Ramazan then Allah (swt) will grant the sawab of two months of continuous fasting to that person.It is, therefore, advisable to fast in the last three days of Shabaan to become eligible for a great Sawab.

Loyalty of al-Abbas [a]

"Surely our remembrance [dhikr] is from the remembrance of Allah"

Mubarak to the lovers of the Ahlul-bayt [a] on the Wiladat of Imam Husayn [a], Abul Fadl al-Abbas [a], and Imam Sajjad [a]. Indeed Sha'baan is the blessed month of joy in which there is nothing but blessings and celebrations, including the upcoming Wiladat of our Master and Imam on 15th Sha'baan. And to emphasize the connection between Imam Husayn [a] and the mission of Imam al-Mahdi [a], one just needs to gaze upon the millions that will gather in Kerbala on the 15th of this month.Surely it is fitting that the Wiladat of Abul Fadl [a] follows the Wiladat of his Master, for there is no separating the two brothers! The following are a number of ahadith regarding Al-Abbas:
Imam Sadiq [a] said:"Our uncle Abbas the son of Ali had a penetrating insight and a firm faith." (A'yan al-Shia, vol. 7, p. 430)
Those familiar with the tragedy of Kerbala have attempted to understand the role, status, sacrifice, and courage of Abbas ibn Ali [a]. One such example is as follows: amidst the preparations of war, Abbas ibn Ali [a] and his brothers were offered a letter from Ubaydullah, commander in chief of Yazid's army, ensuring their safety. Abbas ibn Ali [a] turned towards Shimr, who was carrying the letter, and said: "May Allah curse you and the letter you have brought. Are you offering us safety while the son of the Messenger of Allah is not safe?" With those words he sent them back into their own army.Or is it possible to recognize his magnificence and status at the time when Imam Husayn [a] bid farewell to those who were willing to give up before the battle? "I have given permission for all of you to leave. You are free (to go)," said Imam Husayn [a]. "Leave and you no longer need to remain true to your allegiance with me". It was Abul Fadl al-Abbas [a] who broke the silence and said: "Why should we perform such an act? To live after you, never! May Allah (SWT) forbid such a day! "What degree of faith lies within him, which causes him to recite epic verses while his right hand has been cut off by the army of Yazid? In a situation all others would fail to handle, Abbas [a] said:"By Allah (SWT), if you cut my right hand, I will never stand back, and I will protect my religion; and I will support the Imam who stands firm in his belief, and is the grandson of the pure and truthful Prophet."Abul Fadl al-Abbas [a] is that same person whom when Imam Husayn [a] hurried to his martyred body, made a statement that he had never before: a statement, which is another proof for the status of Abbas [a]. In losing his brother, Imam Hussain (A.S.) said: "(and) now my back has broken!"Imam Sajjad [a] has said about his uncle: "May Allah bless Abbas the son of Ali, who dedicated (his life), was examined by calamity, and lost his life for his brother to the extent that his two hands were cut off. Verily Abbas has a status in the presence of Allah that all the martyrs will envy on the Day of Judgment" Thus, in congratulating the lovers of the Ahlul-bayt [a] on this auspicious occasion, we pay that we are granted to visitation (Ziyarah) of Kerbala and Najaf very soon, and that we learn the lesson of true loyalty towards our present Imam [a].
