From A Grieving Heart!

As soon as the preacher went up to the pulpit, the Ummah started to lament and weep – There was a presence of tremendous grief and sorrow. They all knew what was coming and the tragic events of Kerbala that were going to be revealed in minute detail.. The plight of the beloved Imam, his loneliness, his being away from his home, his parting from his family, his having lost everything he had, his thirst and his hunger, his grief and his broken heart all was going to be revealed at this moment – The hearts sunk at the bewilderment at the state of endurance of  this one person on a mission – A mission to uphold the truth and fight against injustice and tyranny – A fight against power and authority –.

The preacher started to summarize firstly, all that happened on this day – Significantly he talked about Hur’s round turn and the great pardon followed by his martyrdom – All Hur needed was a process of thinking what he was doing and that was it – He died a hero.

Alas, how many a times we know we did a wrong thing and we fail to make that small turnabout and put matters back in order and become heroes ourselves by submitting to that small acceptance of fault.

The preacher then said that it had taken three days for Umr Ibn Saa’d to take up his stand against the beloved Imam and he did that because of an opportunity to get his hands upon a kingdom and governorship of a place called Ra’i. Alas how many times do we submit to the wrong just to gain a small importance and an opportunity to ‘be someone’ in the authority. By the way Umr ibn Saad never got what he thrived for in the end. How could he? Divine justice is supreme.

He talked about so many relevant and substantially relevant episodes to be reflected upon and we went on weeping and lamenting – and then we made a significant statement – Had I been there, Oh our beloved Imam, we would have been with you and we would have laid down our lives for you – All the while, inside us we knew even today we cannot really uphold justice and fairness. Even today we let go of simple, evident principles for small gains, we slander, we backbite and we deceive – and we gain temporary victories exactly the way it happened in Kerbala, on this day of Ashura.

The desert calm vibrated with the voices of the ‘wrong’ proclaiming Allaho Akber while the family of the prophet sat on the warm sands of the desert shelter less and lonely – The bodies of the ‘rights’ lying in appalling condition some without their heads on them – The ‘wrongs’ were buried, the ‘rights’ lay unshrouded and unburied – What kind of Allaho Akber chants were these ? And yet, they thought they were holy and had carried out a holy duty –

So what was it all ? Wasn’t that a fight of justice against injustice ? We lamented not knowing what it was, really. We lamented the episode – We did not lament the flouting of the principles by the army opposing justice. But we wept, nevertheless, and we wept so that we be counted amongst the followers and supporters of this great Imam –

For the first time, I lamented because even after 1400 years I had failed to ‘see’ – I was glad I was not born then, for I am not sure where I would have been – I have not been a HUR even today, and for most of the time I think like gaining something out of situations by deception, lying and manipulation of the weak. Yes, I wept – Perhaps the opportunity had come for me to make a HUR turnabout or be condemned to live with injustice. I knew I could only really lament the Imam’s plight if I were sincere in my daily life and uphold values and principles – failure to do that, I now know, would just dismiss this Ashura as any other that went by in my life so far..

And the preacher summed up – he said ‘ even if you did not belong to any religion, to uphold the principles of justice and fairness is built-in by the creator in you – and, if you follow the religion of Hussain then to flout these principles cannot simply ‘fit in’ – How would you do such a thing , and to make it worse keep on lamenting? What are you grieving about?

The Correct Wages

Suleiman, one of the friends of Imam Ali Ridha (A.S.) says, "I went along with the Imam (A.S.) to his house. The labors were busy at work. There was a stranger among them whom the Imam (A.S.) did not recognize.

He said, "Who is this man?"

They said: “We have brought him from outside, so that he may help us”.

He said, "Have you concluded an agreement with him and fixed his wages?"

They said, "No, he is a good man, whatever we pay him he accepts it and does not utter a word."

Imam (A.S.) was angry and annoyed and said, "I have always told you that when you employ someone for a job first of all fix his wages. Because, when his wages are fixed and you give more than that to him, he will become happy. But if you do not fix his wages and give him three times the amount, he thinks you have not given him the correct wages."

Sheikh Saduk narrates through the words of Ibrahim bin Abbas that, "I never saw Imam Ridha (A.S.) committing excess over anyone in talking and interrupting anybody's speech before its coming to the end. He did not stretch his legs in the presence of others. When the meal table was laid he invited the servants to it, and took his meals with them. After taking rest in the nights he got up and made himself busy with the prayers to God. Similar to his fore fathers he carried food to the houses of the afflicted ones at the mid of nights."

"Mohammad bin Abi Ebad" says about Imam (A.S.) "He used mats of palm date leaves, straws and marsh reed in the summer season, and woolen carpets in the winter. He led a simple life in his home, but when he went out he used to decorate himself and put on new and clean dress.

“He respected and honored the guests to the extent that one night a lamp of the house went out of order, the guest got to his feet to put it right. Imam (A.S.) made him sit and himself set the lamp right, and said, "We do not employ our guests (exploit) upon work."

Yasir, the servant of Imam (A.S.) says, Imam (A.S.) said to us, "Whenever you are busy taking your meal, if I call you, do not get up till you have finished up eating."

Another friend of Imam (A.S.) says, "One day a stranger came to Imam's (A.S.) house and said, I am one of your friends and am also not a poor man but my money has finished up and I do not have the expanses to return. You give me an amount and when I return to my city I will give it out as alms on you behalf."

Imam (A.S.) got up and went to another room, brought an amount of two hundred dirhams and gave it to him from upside the door and said, "Take this and go and it is not necessary to give it away as alms on my behalf."

They asked the Imam (A.S.), "Why did you do it this way that he may not see you."

He said, "So that he does not catch my sight and get ashamed (embarrassed)."

Value of drop of tear on Imam Hussain (as)

One day Sheikh Bahjat (ra) talked about the generosity of the Imams (as) saying: ‘In Iraq, there is a small town near the place where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers meet called al-Musayyab. A Shia man used to pass by this town from time to time whenever he went to perform the Ziyarat of the Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali (as) in Najaf. A Sunni man, too, was residing in this same town.

The latter quite often used to make fun of the Shia man whenever he saw him going to visit the shrine of the Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali (as), so much so that he dared once to speak ill of the Holy Imam (as).
The Shia was very angry and he complained about this matter to the Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali (as) during one of his visits. During that night, he saw the Imam (as) in his vision and once more complained to him about this matter.

Imam Ali (as) said, ‘He [the Sunni man] has done us a favour, and we cannot punish him in the life of this world no matter what sins he commits.’

The Shia asked, ‘What favour is it? Did he do you a favour when he dared to speak ill of you?’

The Imam (as) said, ‘No, but he was sitting one day at the meeting place of both rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates, and he was looking at the Euphrates. He remembered the story of Karbala and the thirst of Imam al-Husain (as), so he said this to himself: ‘Omer ibn Sa’d was wrong when he killed Imam Hussein (as) and his followers as they were thirsty, and it was better for him to give them water before killing them.’

A tear trickled down his eyes out of grief for Abu Abdullah Al-Hussein (as); therefore, it became mandatory on us never to punish him in this life.’

The Shia says, I woke up from my sleep and returned to al-Musayyab and met the Sunni man on the road. He said to me in ridicule: ‘Did you visit your Imam, and did you convey our message to him?!’
I said, ‘Yes, I conveyed your message to him, and I carry his message to you.’

The man laughed and said. ‘What is this message which you carry to me?’

He narrated to him the incident from beginning to end. The Sunni man lowered his head to the ground and kept thinking: ‘O Lord! Nobody at that moment was near me, and I did not talk about this incident to anyone; so, how did Imam Ali (as) become familiar with it?’

Then he said, ‘I testify that there is no God save Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and that Ali, the Commander of the Faithful, is a friend of Allah and the Wasi of the Messenger of Allah.’

Reward of trimming one's nails and moustache

It is narrated by Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) from his predecessors that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, "For one who trims his nails on Friday the Almighty Allah would remove pain from his fingers and insert medicine to them."

The Holy Prophet (saw) says, "One who trims his nails and moustache on Thursday or Saturday will remain safe from pain of teeth and eyes."

Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) says, "One who trims all his nails except one on Thursday and trims the remaining one on Friday, Allah would remove his poverty."

It is narrated by Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) from his predecessors that the Holy Prophet (saw) said, "Trimming nails prevents hardships and increases  one's earnings.

Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) says, "Trimming nails on Friday saves one from leprosy, leucotomy and blindness. If it is not possible to trim them, one should at least run them on something."

Imam Jafar Sadiq (a.s) says, "One who recites 'Bismillahi wa billahi wa a'laa millaati rasoolillaah' while trimming nails and moustache on Friday would get the reward of freeing a slave from the progeny of Ismail (a.s) for each hair and nail trimmed."

Remembering the forgotten

Once Hazrat Khizar asked Imam Hasan (a.s), "How does a man forget anything although he knew it previously and was in his mind?" Imam replied, "The man's heart is in a pot (Zarf) when the pot is shut, the man feels a sort of forgetfulness. But as he recites Darud upon Muhammad (saw) and Aley Muhammad (a.s), the cover of forgetting is torn  and the forgotten thing comes to mind and enlightens the heart." Imam (a.s) further added to say that the incomplete Darud if recited the curtains get hardened, the heart glooms in dark and forget anything, hence recite too much Darud upon us."

Dua-e-Ghareek

We have been commanded to recite this Dua regularly. Shayikh Sadooq narrates from Abdullah bin Sinan who says that Imam Sadiq (a.s.) said,
"After this a time of such doubt will befall you that you will be without the visible signs and a guiding Imam. And no one shall be able to achieve salvation from this except those who recite "Dua-e-Ghareeq."
(Supplication of the drowning man).
The narrator asked what this Dua was? Imam (a.s.) replied,

O Allah! O Beneficent! O Merciful.O One who changes the hearts (of people)Give me steadfastness upon Your religion

Dua-e-Mujeer

"Dua e Mujeer" is a supplication of high eminence which is reported to have been brought by Jibraeel (as) for Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w) it is mentioned by him that the reward of the one reciting it during the nights of full moon (13th 14th 15th) of the month of Ramadhan, is that his sins are forgiven even if they are in such plenty as the drops of rain water, leaves of trees or sand of desert. It is also very effective for the cure the sick, fulfillment of debts, acquisition of wealth & relief from sorrow. May Allah (swt) give us Tawfeeq to recite in all 3 nights. Inshallah.

Mahe Ramadan 2011: May Be Your Last Mahe Ramadan!

We are once again blessed with the Honorable month of Ramadan. A month for renewing our Imaan (faith), strengthening our willpower and seeking Taubah (forgiveness), a unique opportunity to strengthen the bond of love with our Creator, through fasting, recitation of Holy Quran, Nawafil Salaah and through acts of charity.

People approach Mahe Ramadan in different ways. Mahe Ramadan means different things to different people.

Some people (first group) view Mahe Ramadan as a period of expressing their undying love for the Beloved. For them, Mahe Ramadan is a valuable, precious and rare occasion. They spend all their time doing good, convinced that the reward of each act is multiplied manifold. Patience, sympathy and generosity beautify the demeanour. They guard their tongues and remain preoccupied in chanting Laa ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah), seeking forgiveness, begging for Jannah (Paradise) and seeking protection from Jahannam (Hellfire).

They are driven by the words of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that say: "The fish in the sea, seek forgiveness for them until they break their fast. Everyday Allah (SWT) decorates Jannah for them and says to it: The time is near when my faithful servants shall cast the great trials (of the world) and come to you ... On the last night of Ramadan they are forgiven ..." (Ahmad)

Imam Muhammad ibn Ali al-Baqir (as) said: "O Jabir! One who happens to have the month of Ramadan and he fasts in that month and worships Allah (SWT) for a part of night, guards his tongue and private parts, saves his eyes from what is prohibited and does not hurt anyone, his sins would be wiped off like the day when he was born from the womb of his mother." Jabir said, "May I be sacrificed, what an excellent tradition it is!" Imam Muhammad ibn Ali al-Baqir (as) replied, "(Also) see its conditions, which are difficult."

There are others (second group) who 'welcome' Mahe Ramadan with sighs of reluctance. To them Mahe Ramadan is an unfair imposition, a month of deprivation and hardship. They grudgingly keep fast and drag themselves to the Masjid for the Salaah (prayer). Their concept of fasting is limited to physical abstention of food, drink and marital relationship with wife. They spend their time in gossip, watching TV and wasting their nights parked at cafe corners and restaurants. They are hardly ever stirred to Tilawah, Zikr and Dua, nor are they careful of their Salaah. They are not ever inclined towards Khairat (Charity), nor are they careful of their Ibadah (Worship). Their goal in Ramadan is to prepare for Eid ul Fitr (Feast).

The words of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) aptly describes their spiritless endeavours: "Many are the ones who fast attaining nothing by such fasting except hunger and many perform Salaah by night attaining nothing by it except the discomfort of staying awake." (Ibn Majah)

There is yet a third group who is hardly ever moved by Mahe Ramadan. They neither read Salaah nor fast. They continue living recklessly in sin. They neither have the will or the time to make any sort of change in their daily routines, as per injunctions of the Shariah.

Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) also said: "Whoever does not fast for even one day in Mahe Ramadan, without a valid excuse, shall never be able to repay that day even if he fasts for the rest of his life." (Ahmad)

Mahe Ramadan is a sacred training school which after completion of one month course gives result to each believer, to evaluate his position. Mahe Ramadan is a sacred training School where a believer learns how to recharge ones spiritual batteries to gain ones provision for the Akhirah (Hereafter). If one can not attain advantage from this month then when will he do so?

It is a noted fact that after each Mahe Ramadan, on Mahe Ramadan Eid holidays many people indulge in immoral, shameless and indecent activities of enjoyment, which Shariah condemns. People revert to entertainment of music, forbidden films and women displaying their beautification etc.

They spend lavishly on gambling and profligacy, and consider it as a part of joy of the festival. Involvement of the Muslims in such nefarious activities is the major cause of humiliation and fall of Muslim Power worldwide. When non Muslims observe the ugly life style of Muslims they enjoy, and support them. Mahe Ramadan ends with Eid ul Fitr but the deeds and actions displayed during Mahe Ramadan should serve as facilitator which should be followed throughout the next year. Eid is a bliss occasion of Islam which has no concern with the festivities of other faiths.

Brothers and sisters in Islam! Fear Allah (SWT) and beware of wasting your life away in futile activities. Make use of your time by being positive and constructive, for it is by doing so you can achieve the pleasure of Allah (SWT).

This may well be your last Ramadan Kareem, your last opportunity to benefit from the special blessings and forgiveness that accompanies this holy month. Know that Mahe Ramadan is a manifestation of Allah's (SWT) bountiful blessings on His slaves. Use it as a turning point in your life; a time for transformation towards a better way of life; a change from the ignominy of sins to the glory of obedience; from weakness and laziness to strength and vigour; from bad customs and detestable habits to righteousness and upright conduct.

Perhaps it may be our last Ramadan Kareem, our last opportunity to benefit from the special blessings and forgiveness that accompanies this holy month, for who knows we may be there or not to receive the blessings next year.

Role of worship

Worship means devoting all the dimensions of life to the divine will and pleasure. Giving divine meaning to all activities has significant effects on the life of man, some of which are the following:

1. Making the perishable perpetual

Man and all his efforts will perish, but whatever is done for His pleasure will remain as an asset. The Holy Qur’an says:

﴿ ما عِنْدَ كُمْ يَنْفَدُ وَ ما عِنْدَ اللهِ باقٍ ﴾

“That which is with you will be spent but what is with Allah shall last.”

It also says elsewhere:

﴿ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ هَالِكٌ إِلَّا وَجْهَهُ ﴾

“Everything is to perish except His Face.”

2. Changing the material into the spiritual

If the purpouse behind {man’s} deeds be a Godly one if man could set the intention, motive and direction of his activities along the path of the divine will, and conduct himself as a true servant of God, even his mundane acts such as eating, dressing, traveling, visiting, housekeeping, studying, and all his daily chores would become spiritual. On the contrary, sometimes even the most sacred of works, if done with materialistic and worldly motives, could lose their worth.

3. Individual and collective development

Worship of God demands a total disregard of personal whims and caprice; non-glorification of any race, garment, language, land, and city; association with God, the Ultimate Power and Perfection. And gratitude to the Bestower of blessings. Taken together, they play an important role in the intellectual development of the individual and society collectively. Worship means moving along the straight path of God:

﴿ وَأَنْ اعْبُدُونِي هَذَا صِرَاطٌ مُّسْتَقِيمٌ ﴾

“Worship Me. This is a straight path.”

﴿ وَاسْتَعِينُواْ بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلاَةِ ﴾

“And take recourse in patience and prayer.”

Also, worship individually protects human beings from caprice, sin and temptation, and a devoted society that worships God consciously rejects the worship of taghuts, tyrants and superpowers. ‘Allamah Iqbal Lahuri said:

آدم از بى بصرى بندگى آدم کرد
گوهرى داشت ولى نذر قباد و جم كرد
يعنى از خوى غلامى ز سگان پستتر است
من نديدم كه سگى پيش سگى سرخم كرد

Due to a lack of insight, man serves another man,
He possessed a gem but gave it to others,
He is worse than dogs in his slavish demeanor,
I have yet to see a dog bow down before another.

Worship improves individuals as well as societies. In most cases, the corruption in society emanates from, and is caused by the inclination to worship any other, besides God.

Reasons for worship

The following reasons persuade man to worship and serve God:

1. Greatness of God

When man sees the greatness and magnificence of God, he unconsciously feels humble and weak before Him, just as a person who regards himself insignificant before a distinguished person and scholar, also honors and respects him.

2. Feelings of dependence

Man’s nature is such that he feels humble before some one upon whom he is dependent. Our very existence depends upon the will of God and we need Him all the time. This feeling of need and deficiency urges man to worship God—for only He is the Ultimately Perfect and Independent. It is stated in some hadiths that if there were no death, poverty and sickness, some people would never humble themselves before God.

3. Awareness of blessings

Man loves to possess and enjoy blessings. Remembering the abundant blessings of God can be the strongest motive for worshipping Him. In the litanies {munajat} of the infallible Imams (‘a), the blessings of God, including those that are related to those prior to the birth of man, are initially mentioned, and in this way man shows his love to God and than he humbly presents his requests. God also says:

﴿ فَلْيَعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَذَا الْبَيْتِ ٭ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٍ وَآمَنَهُم مِّنْ خَوْفٍ ﴾

“Let them worship the Lord of this House, who has fed them {and saved them} from hunger, and secured them from fear.”[10]

In another verse, man is asked to worship God who created him.

4. Human nature {fitrah}

Worship is an instinctive and integral part of human nature. Being innate, man sometimes treads the correct path and worships God. When misled, he is drawn to the worship of the sun, stones, wood, the cow, money, spouses, and taghuts.[11]

The prophets (‘a) have not come to instill the sense of worship in man. Rather, their mission is to guide this natural disposition in the right direction. ‘Ali (‘a) said:

فَبَعَثَ اللهُ مُحَمَّداً بِالْحَقّ لِيُخرِجَ عِبادَهُ مِنْ عِبادَةِ الأَوْثانِ إِلى عِبادَتِهِ.
“God thus sent down Muhammad in truth to stop His servants from idol-worship, and invite them to His worship.”[12]

Most of the Qur’anic verses related to worship invite people to the divine unity in worship {tawhid fi’l-‘ibadah} and not to the spirit of worship, because that spirit of worship already exists in man. It is like the desire for food which exists in every infant, but if it is not guided, he will eat mud instead of food and enjoy eating it!

Were it not for the leadership of the prophets (‘a), the direction of this instinct would be elsewhere, and instead of God, false and futile deities would be worshipped. Just as during the forty days of the absence of Hadhrat[13] Musa (Moses) (‘a), the people through the temptation of Samiri started worshipping the golden calf.

Ariza - A Letter to the Imam of our time

Translation of Dua-e-Ariza
I have written to you O my master, may His mercy and blessing be on you, seeking a favour from you.
I have complained to you for what has happened to me seeking solutions firstly from Allah and then from you for a matter that has obsessed me.
I am helpless in combating the problem and for that I have resorted to seeking help from Allah and from you. Knowing the status you have with Allah.
I am confident that you will help me get the solutions to my problems swiftly and that you will intercede on my behalf. I am helpless and moreover I am sinful:
so help O master and present this problem to Allah and I pray to Him that He will solve this quickly and grant me victory and success in finding the solution to my problems.
(Write your personal wishes and problems in the provided space)

I am not able to carry or bear with it. Although I am responsible for the increase of my sins and ignorant about my responsibilities (Wajibaats), from Allah which are given to me.
So help me O my master.  Peace be upon you during this time of problems and sorrow.
presents my prayers to Allah before I compensate and before my enemies engulfs me. For you have shown me your blessings.
So I pray to Allah for great salvation and near victory with calmness from all fears,
for Allah is most high and does what he wants. Allah is sufficient for me from beginning and in my hopes.
Whatever Allah wish there is neither strength nor any power except in Allah the High, the Great.

*When dropping the Ariza in the sea, we normally recite the following, addressing Husayn bin Rawh, the 3rd Na’ib of the 12th Imam:
“O Husayn bin Rawh, Salamun Alykum.
I bear witness that you died in the path of Allah and (hence), you are alive and are sustained by Allah.  am addressing you in your life which you lead with Allah – this is my note and wishes to the master of the Era, the 12th Imam (AS), so please hand it over to him for you are indeed trustworthy”.

Titles of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s) - MAHDI

This is his most famous title. The word 'Mahdi' is derived from the infinitive of guidance and means the one who has been guided by the Almighty. In this context Imam Sadiq (a.s) was asked, "Why is he called al - Mahdi?" He replied:
"Because he will be guided to every hidden affairs."

Also it has been narrated from Imam Badiq (a.s), "He is names Mahdi as, he will guide to a hidden affair."

- Biharul Anwaar, Vol. 51, chapter 2,
- Istatul Hudaat, Shaikh Hurr Aameeli, Vol. 7, P. 110 & 169

Characteristics of Imam Mahdi (a.s) are similar to those of Prophets.

Imam Sajjad (a.s) said:
"In our Qaim are found the characteristics of the Prophets (a.s). They are similar to those of our father Hazrat Adam (a.s), Hazrat Nuh (a.s), Hazrat Ibrahim (a.s), Hazrat Isa (a.s), Hazrat Ayyub (a.s), Hazrat Moosa (a.s), and Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa (saw). As regard to Hazrat Adam (a.s) and Hazrat Nuh (a.s) it is their long life. As regards to Hazrat Ibrahim (a.s) it is the secret birth and his staying away from the people. In case of Hazrat Moosa (a.s) it is the fear and his disappearance. In the case of Hazrat Isa (a.s), it is the controversy among the people about him, (some people believe that he is alive and on Allah's order resides on the fourth sky. While others allege that he was crucified.) In the case of Hazrat Ayyub (a.s), it is his perfection after his great test. And in the case of Hazrat Muhammad (saw), it is his reappearance with a sword."

- Kamaaluddin, p.322

Nmaaz-e-Ghufayla

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said:
Recite the recommended prayer in the time of carelessness (Ghaflat) even if it be two Rakats because this two rakat namaaz enables one to enter the Paradise. It was asked: O messenger of Allah! What is the time of carelessness? He replied: The time between Magrib and Isha prayer."

Namaaz-e-Ghufayla is two rakats which is recited between the Magrib and Isha prayer. It has tremendous effect and great merits in the fulfilment of desires in this world and in the hereafter.

METHOD OF NAMAAZ-E-GHUFAYLA

Rule 783. Ghufayla prayers is one of the Mustahab prayers which is offered between Maghrib and Isha prayers having great rewards

In its first Rak'at after Surah al-Hamd, instead of any other Surah, the following verses should be recited:
21.87: And Yunus, when he went away in wrath, so he thought that We would not straiten him, so he called out among afflictions: There is no god but Thou, glory be to Thee; surely I am of those who make themselves to suffer loss.
21.88: So We responded to him and delivered him from the grief and thus do We deliver the believers
(Surah Anbiyah (21), Verse 87-88)
Transliteration

In the second Rak'at after Surah al-Hamd, instead of other Surah, the following verse should be recited:
And with Him are the keys of the unseen treasures — none knows them but He; and He knows what is in the land and the sea, and there falls not a leaf but He knows it, nor a grain in the darkness of the earth, nor anything green nor dry but (it is all) in a clear book.
(Surah Ana'am (6), Verse 59)

Thereafter, the following Dua should be recited:

Thankfulness for Capability (or Means) is also Necessary

If we are receiving sustenance or help from some means, we must be thankful for these too. However we should not consider these means or intermediaries to be independent of Allah. We must accept them only as the agents through whom Allah is causing His Mercy to reach us. These agents only act as a medium of passing the bounties of Allah and hence they must also be acknowledged; as ordered by the Masoom (a.s.).

"One who does not thank his apparent giver (the agent or the means), it is as if he has not thanked his real giver (Allah)."
(Behaarul Anwaar)

"The most thankful amongst you towards Allah is the one who is most thankful to the people (who have helped you)."
(Safinatul Behaar)

There is no doubt that if one considers his helper to be the original doer of good (independent from Allah), he has surely committed shirk.

Thankfulness to the Provider of Bounties

The master of the Universe is Allah and He bestows all the bounties, hence He must be thanked for these. Because all the good deeds are only through His hands. He gives whatever goodness He likes to anyone of His choice. That is why we say with a firm belief, "Al-hamdo lillah" (The praise is only for Allah).

Reliance Upon Allah

"And if Allah should afflict you with harm, then there is none to remove it but He, and if He intends good to you there is none to repel His grace; He brings it to whom He pleases of His servants; and He is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
(Surah Yunus 10:107)

Human Strength is Limited by Divine Will

The strength and the capacity of all the human beings is surrounded by the Divine decree and Allah's will. As we see that a person makes an intention to do something but at the last moment his plans are foiled.

He is unable to complete the task that he had initiated due to the loss of capacity. Actually, what he intended to do was against the Divine will and thus he is hindered from the task. A person inquired from Amirul Momineen Ali (a.s.), "My Master! How did you recognise (realise) Allah?" He replied, "I recognised Him by witnessing the abrogation of intention and the failures of strengths." Allah, undoubtedly is the initiator of all that moves in the Universe and He is the original cause of the various effects in the created world. To acknowledge Allah as the base of everything and to have a firm belief in this is the pinnacle of Tawheed (Belief in the Oneness of Allah).

However very few people are able to achieve this stage of Tawheed. But if one develops a firm conviction that the cause of every effect, whether material or spiritual is Allah, alone, he develops some peculiar characteristics. One of such characteristics is the Fear of Allah.

- Greater Sins, Vol.1

Human Strength

Whatever a human being is able to achieve, is by the strength, the capacity, intellect and will power bestowed on him by Allah. By thought and perseverance, he can make use of these favours to distinguish between good and evil and perform his deeds. Anyone who does not ponder upon the designs which embellish the doors and walls of this world is himself lifeless like the walls. The observation of the creations around him offer enlightenment to the intelligent mind. But one who does not deliberate (ponder), cannot know Allah through His creations and thus he rejects the existence of Allah.

Is there anyone who could produce sweet fruits from woods (of trees)? Does anyone possess the miraculous capability of growing colourful flowers from (among) the thorns? He is that Pure and Flawless God who by His Divine plan and order created the day and the night and gave the light to the sun and the moon.

He is an incomparable king who neither requires a constitution nor a treasure. He is that designer who does not need paints or the tools of designing.
He causes the water springs to erupt from the stones and makes the rain to descend from the clouds. He creates honey from the bee and silk from the silkworm.

If all the creatures come together to discuss the bounties of Allah and continue upto the Day of Qiyamat, they will not have accomplished even a thousandth fraction of their task.
"And if you count Allah's favours, you will not be able to number them; most surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."
(Surah Nahl 16:18)

No Limit to the Splendour of Allah's Might

Allah, the Almighty is the One who brings assistance to the needy beseechers, provides relief to the afflicted who cry out for help and in His hands is all the good. "He is Allah the Creator, the Maker, the Fashioner, the Sustainer, the Giver of life and death the Bestower of benefits, the Punisher, the Acceptor of prayers, the Obeyed One and the Praised." The names and attributes of Allah manifest His greatness. The phrase 'Rabbul Aalameen' (Lord of the worlds) is central to the Divine names. But intellect and reason is bewildered in understanding His attributes, and speech and expression is dumbfounded by His greatness.
(Almanac page 149)

The Holy Quran says:
"Say, if the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would surely be consumed before the words of my Lord are exhausted, though we were to bring the like of that (sea) to add thereto."
(Surah Kahf 18:109)

For the Public Benefit

He was a hard-working man with a pleasant personality. He worked hard while farming and cultivating orchards. He developed several plots and orchards and then gave them all away for the sake of Allah.

One day, he acquired a piece of barren land outside the town which he wanted to cultivate. In order to do this, he decided to dig a well, he chose a suitable place and, putting
his hopes in the grace of Allah, he began to dig.

Several days went by, but still there was no sign of any water coming out of the well.

One day, he picked up a pickaxe, entered the well and, using all his strength and energy, worked very hard for a while, but still there was no sign of water. Exhausted, he came out of the well, wiped away the sweat of his brow, rested for a while, and then re-entered the well.

He was swinging the pickaxe with such vigor that the sound of his breathing could be heard all around. After receiving a strong, hard blow with the pickaxe, the ground suddenly split open, and fresh, clear water bubbled up.

He climbed quickly out of what had now become a wonderful well in the dry desert which would soon turn all the surrounding area into a lovely orchard. Soon the people gathered around to see it. Each of them was commenting on It.

"What a hard working man is he" one said.

"He is a good and generous man," said another.

"Allah has been generous to him and given him goodness".

"He and his descendants have become rich forever." said some.

Some congratulated him while some were jealous.

"Bring me a paper and pen" he said and then he sat down and wrote the following:

“I have endowed this well and the land surrounding it in charity for its income to be used as follows:

a.    In helping the poor and destitute.

b.    In helping the travelers far away from their homes.

c.    In providing the means for the marriages of orphans.

d.    In providing medical care for the poor.

e.    In the doing of good works of public benefit.

“I have endowed this well in charity so as to seek the pleasure of Allah and the rewards of the Hereafter, and in order to be saved from the of Hell”.

Do you know who this pious generous man was? He was none but the Leader of all the Believers Imam Ali (as).

Me'raj

Angels with Feathers: We continued on our path until we reached to the end of the seventh heaven. It was there at the end of the heaven that we witnessed the Throne of Allah. Here I saw an Angel who was glorifying Allah  such: "Wherever I may be, glory is to my Lord. I do not know where your Lord is due to His great status. "

This Angel had two wings such that if they were to spread open, it would cover the east to the west of the Universe. Every morning he would open up his wings, rest against something and cry out such: "Glory be to Allah, the King, the Holy. Glory be to Allah, the Great, the Most High. There is no god except Allah, the Living and Self Subsisting.” Whenever the Angel would say this tasbih, all the peacocks that are on the Earth would start to praise Allah  and open their wings up in respect (of Allah).

Whenever this Angel in the heaven would become quiet, the peacocks on the Earth would become quiet. The Angel in the heaven had green hair and white wings ‑ so white that no one has ever seen anything that white before. Under its green hair, there are white wings which are very beautiful ‑ the green which until now has never been seen before.

(From Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 18, p. 327, Bab 3 - Ithbaat al-Mi`raaj wa ma`anaahu wa kayfiyyatuhu wa sifatuhu wa ma jaraa feehi wa wasf al-buraaq, Hadith 34.)

Bait al Ma’mur Along with Jibra'il, we entered into Bait al‑Ma'mur. A group of my friends were with me all of whom were wearing new clothing. Others from amongst them were wearing old clothing, and when they tried to enter this area, they were prevented. Only those who were wearing new clothing were permitted to enter with me into Bait al‑Ma'mur. In this place, I performed a two Rak'at Salat, and then left.

Two rivers passed by me ‑ one was al‑Kawthar and the other was the river of Mercy. I drank from the river of al‑Kawthar and performed a Ghusl with the river of Mercy. I was then guided to enter into Paradise. In one area of Paradise, I saw my house and that of my wife. The ground and the dirt of Paradise had the smell of Musk and Amber. In the rivers of Paradise, I saw a servant of Allah who was bathing. I asked her, "O' servant! Who are you for?" She replied to me, "I am (here) for Zaid ibn Harith." When I saw Zaid (after this event), I gave him the good tidings of this.

"The birds of Paradise were as the camels of Khurasan (in size). The pomegranates that were hanging on the trees were so large and glowing and incomparable to anything else. It was here that I saw a huge tree such that if a bird were to fly around it for seven hundred years, he would still not be able to go around the entire tree. In Paradise, there is not a single house in which one of the branches of this tree does not cover. I asked Jibra'il regarding this tree and he told me, "This is the tree o f Tuba about which, Allah has said in the Qur'an:"...Tuba shall be theirs and a goodly return” Surah al‑Ra'd (13).  Thus this tree of Tuba is in Paradise and all of the houses in there are under (the shade) of this tree.

I asked Jibra'il concerning all the wonderful things that we had witnessed including the rivers, and those things which frightened me, and he replied, "These are all various levels of veils which are placed between Allah  the High and His creations. If these curtains were not there, then the Throne of Allah would have been visible however, it is not possible for any of His creations to see His Light (Nur).'"
