Click 'Yes' to Save the Changes

Nearly everyone in this age of modern technology has at some stage worked with a P.C. We have used it to draft documents, amend these documents, copied and pasted onto documents, used the 'undo' icon, edited documents, just to mention a few of the time saving operations that we find on this device.

After opening a document that we have worked upon previously and made the necessary changes and improvements a little box appears on the screen asking the question: Do you want to save the changes you have made to this document? You are then given the option of selecting the YES tab or the NO tab. Selecting the YES tab will give you the desired results while selecting the NO tab literally takes you back to square one. All the effort made in editing, improving and shaping the document becomes an exercise in futility.

Don't we all find ourselves in a similar predicament when the blessed month of Ramadaan passes us? Just think of your book of deeds like a document on your P.C. During the month of Ramadaan we have done amongst other things the following: Increased our ibaadah and acts of charity; Taken control of our feelings and emotion; Responded with compassion and sensitivity to the needs of other; Multiplied our good deeds.

At the same time we have spent many hours on the Musallah begging for Allah's forgiveness for our sins, errors and transgressions.

The vital question that needs to be asked is : Do we want to save the changes that we have made in the month of Ramadaan? Are we going to press the YES tab or the No tab? Pressing the YES tab will leave us with a new, improved version. A version of heightened spirituality, a version of righteousness, a version that is pleasing to our Creator. Pressing the NO tab will take us back to square one; back to our old habits before Ramadaan, back to the life of sin and immorality, back to a life of heedlessness and back to a life subjecting ourselves to the wrath of the Almighty.

How do we improve on this document; the document of our lives, the document of our deeds, the document that we are going to present to Allah the Almighty on the Day of Reckoning. Here are some hints: Copy and Paste from the life of our illustrious master Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa Aalihi wasallam).

Use the 'undo' icon by making taubah immediately after any transgression as the Hadith states "The one who repents from sin is like one who has committed no sin at all"

There may not be a need to do a "spell check" but there is certainly a need to do a "sincerity check" and a "shari'ah check" Are we complying?

There may be files and folders that we want to keep while there could be some others we would not even want others to know exist. Many of us begged Allah to "delete" our sins and dark deeds. We cried before Allah, shed tears of remorse and vowed not to commit those sins in future. Going back to the sins that we have asked Allah's forgiveness for would be like making a visit to the "recycle bin".

What about viruses? P.C. users are also very wary about e-mails they receive and the sites that they visit, fearing the admission of a virus that may pollute their system and cause it to malfunction.

Why do we then subject our minds and thoughts to immoral sites and dens of vice which would pollute our moral system and cause us to malfunction? What anti-virus software have we installed to ward off the variety of fitnahs that confront us everyday?

Fortunate is the person who has saved the changes. Even more unfortunate is the person who has made no changes as he/she has nothing to save.

Fasting in the last 3 days of Shabaan

Imam Jafer Sadiq (a.s.) reports that Prophet Mohammad (sawaw) has said that Shabaan is my month and Ramzan is the month of Allah (swt). Therefore, if anyone observers one day of fasting during Shabaan, I will do his/her "shafaat" on the day of judgment, and one who observers two days of fasting then his/her previous sins would be forgiven and if someone observers three days of fasting then it would be just like all the sins have been washed away. Imam Ali Riza (a.s.) has said that if someone observes fast during the last three days of Shabaan and combines them with the fasting during the month of Ramazan then Allah (swt) will grant the sawab of two months of continuous fasting to that person. It is, therefore, advisable to fast in the last three days of Shabaan to become eligible for a great Sawab.

Difficulties and Calamities Nullify the Sins

The Almighty Allah imposes difficulties and sends calamities to the sinful people among the followers of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.) This is because He wishes to cleanse them of their sins so that they are not liable to any punishment after death. If the sins are more, then he gets a difficult death and if the sins are still in excess then he is punished in Barzakh (grave) upto the Day of Judgement.
It is also stated in the traditions that if there is a sinner whose sins are so much that even after all the punishment they are not expiated; then that person will be interned in the Hell-fire till he has recompensed for the remaining sins. The devotee of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.) shall not remain in the fire forever. The everlasting punishment is only for the unbelievers and the enemies of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.)

Loyalty of al-Abbas [a]

"Surely our remembrance [dhikr] is from the remembrance of Allah"
- Imam Muhammad b.Ali al-Baqir [a] al-Kafi Vol.2, pg. 496, no.2
Mubarak to the lovers of the Ahlul-bayt [a] on the Wiladat of Imam Husayn [a], Abul Fadl al-Abbas [a], and Imam Sajjad [a]. Indeed Sha'baan is the blessed month of joy in which there is nothing but blessings and celebrations, including the upcoming Wiladat of our Master and Imam on 15th Sha'baan. And to emphasize the connection between Imam Husayn [a] and the mission of Imam al-Mahdi [a], one just needs to gaze upon the millions that will gather in Kerbala on the 15th of this month.Surely it is fitting that the Wiladat of Abul Fadl [a] follows the Wiladat of his Master, for there is no separating the two brothers! The following are a number of ahadith regarding Al-Abbas:
Imam Sadiq [a] said:"Our uncle Abbas the son of Ali had a penetrating insight and a firm faith." (A'yan al-Shia, vol. 7, p. 430)
Those familiar with the tragedy of Kerbala have attempted to understand the role, status, sacrifice, and courage of Abbas ibn Ali [a]. One such example is as follows: amidst the preparations of war, Abbas ibn Ali [a] and his brothers were offered a letter from Ubaydullah, commander in chief of Yazid's army, ensuring their safety. Abbas ibn Ali [a] turned towards Shimr, who was carrying the letter, and said: "May Allah curse you and the letter you have brought. Are you offering us safety while the son of the Messenger of Allah is not safe?" With those words he sent them back into their own army.Or is it possible to recognize his magnificence and status at the time when Imam Husayn [a] bid farewell to those who were willing to give up before the battle? "I have given permission for all of you to leave. You are free (to go)," said Imam Husayn [a]. "Leave and you no longer need to remain true to your allegiance with me". It was Abul Fadl al-Abbas [a] who broke the silence and said: "Why should we perform such an act? To live after you, never! May Allah (SWT) forbid such a day! "What degree of faith lies within him, which causes him to recite epic verses while his right hand has been cut off by the army of Yazid? In a situation all others would fail to handle, Abbas [a] said:"By Allah (SWT), if you cut my right hand, I will never stand back, and I will protect my religion; and I will support the Imam who stands firm in his belief, and is the grandson of the pure and truthful Prophet."Abul Fadl al-Abbas [a] is that same person whom when Imam Husayn [a] hurried to his martyred body, made a statement that he had never before: a statement, which is another proof for the status of Abbas [a]. In losing his brother, Imam Hussain (A.S.) said: "(and) now my back has broken!"Imam Sajjad [a] has said about his uncle: "May Allah bless Abbas the son of Ali, who dedicated (his life), was examined by calamity, and lost his life for his brother to the extent that his two hands were cut off. Verily Abbas has a status in the presence of Allah that all the martyrs will envy on the Day of Judgment" Thus, in congratulating the lovers of the Ahlul-bayt [a] on this auspicious occasion, we pay that we are granted to visitation (Ziyarah) of Kerbala and Najaf very soon, and that we learn the lesson of true loyalty towards our present Imam [a].
ﺑﺎﺲ ﻋﻠﻲﺮﻀﺎ ﺍﻣﻴﺮﻋﻠﻲ ﻜﺮﻴﻢ--"A person who fulfills the need of one of our friends is like the one who has fulfilled the need for all of us (the Ahlul-bayt)." - Imam Musa b. Ja'far al-Kazim [a] Bihar Vol.100, pg.121, sec.2, no.26

Two women’s witnesses equals one men – is that equality of gender in Islam?

My white colleague Mark at work barge in my office saying, so you Muslims promote equality of gender don’t you! and your holy book says “two women’s witnesses equals one man” is that what you folks called equality of gender? As usual he caught me off guard in the midst of my work. I replied, are you asking me a question or you have already reached your conclusion. He said go ahead and give your best shot I am here for a fair debate.
I started by asking, so tell me Mark, how is your relationship with your wife? He said what has that to do with this issue of equality of gender. I replied nothing just asking as I remembered few weeks before you were complaining about your wife nagging attitude and your skirmishes with her. He said well, you see it has been a roller coaster ride it has its ups and its down. I said “fair enough” now allow me to share with you what Dr. Jennifer al-Knopf, Director of the Sex and Marital Therapy Programmed of North-western University has to say on the phenomenon of menopause, she writes in Newsweek International on May 25th 1992.
“... Women never know what their body is doing to them ... some reporting debilitating symptoms from hot flashes to night sweat, sleeplessness, irritability, mood swings, short term memory loss, migraine, headaches, urinary inconsistence and weight gain. Most such problems can be traced to the drop-off in the female hormones estrogen and progesterone, both of which govern the ovarian cycle. But every woman starts with a different level of hormones and loses them at different rates. The unpredictability is one of the most upsetting aspects. Women never know what their body is going to do to them ...”
I continued further, so scientifically it is a proven fact that the female hormone levels and their interactions with different functions of female brain alter neuronal functions during different phases of menstrual cycle, pregnancy and also during the period of menopause. These changes affect emotional stability, judgment, inhibition, excitation and mood and hence it is certainly a mercy of God to relieve females of complete responsibility because of these biological limitations while on the other hand man does not have any of these obstacles.
Mark partially nodding his head raised the objection flag by saying, I still think woman is as good of a witness as a man provided they are not undergoing menstruation or Pregnancy or going through Menopause so now the question is why wouldn’t Islam accept women as one complete witness when they are not undergoing this conditions? I immediately shot back, you got that right however in that case the judge would be required to ask these personal questions to the women before accepting her witness and that would be an embarrassment to the women in public instead why not just have two women witnesses equals one man so in case one makes a mistake the other will be there to rectify?
Mark concluded by saying I don’t know if I understand Islam or not but I do understand my roller coaster ride now, you see 99% of the time my arguments and fights with my wife is when she is undergoing menstruation and I better start down playing her during that crucial time cycle.

As the rain pours down from the sky...

As the rain pours down from the sky,
You open your window and wish it was dry,
It’s your Lord showing what is to be,
So powerful and unique, for all to see.
By His grace the rain falls,
By His grace babies crawl,
By His grace the sun shines high,
By His grace we marvel at the sky.
The falling of rain allows plants to grow,
The falling of rain allows the formation of a rainbow,
The falling of rain makes us say, “Subhanallah”,
The falling of rain is a good time to make Dua.
This is one of the ways your Lord displays His splendor,
It gives us time to think of His supremacy and glamour,
We need to know and believe that He is inside us,
He is near to you whether you are walking or in a bus.
The number of bounties and blessing He provides,
Are so many and occur at times to make us rise,
We need to thank Him for giving us life,
One of tests, trials, and continuous strife.
He gives to us what He wills will be good,
Yet do we atone to it, have we understood?
When we are faced with a calamity we put the blame on Him,
Yet we don’t realize who created us, our soul light is dim.
We must acknowledge and praise Him daily,
To such an extent that we mean it sincerely,
He is the One to whom we shall eventually return,
Without money or fame, but with the deeds we earned.

Daily Program for the Believer from Morning to Night

  1. Start the day with the Fajr or Morning Prayer after performing the nafilah or supplementary Fajr prayer, which acts as a spiritual preparation and prevent laziness and lethargy. It also compensates for any deficiency in the obligatory prayer
  2. Perform Tasbih al-Zahra' directly after prayer, as well as after each of five prayers. Then recite special supplications like those mentioned in the book Mafateeh Al-Jinan. At least once in his life, the believer should recite the supplication of al-Ahd every day for a period of forty days. It is important, however, to stay awake till sunrise, a deed that might increase one's wealth, and to read at least 100 ayats of the Qur'an during this time.
  3. Say the Estia'atha, asking God for protection against the Devil and his evils, at the beginning of the day.
  4. Promise yourself, as you are going to work or school, not to commit any disobedience during this day. Then observe yourself carefully throughout day time, and finally evaluate your performance before you go to bed!
  5. Remind yourself that you are going to work for the sake of God, aiming to obtain financial independence. A woman should choose a workplace where she can avoid mixing with men. Devils and corrupt men are waiting for any chance to hunt women, especially during work time when no barriers are maintained between the sexes.
  6. Try always to be under the purity of Wudhu', or ritual ablution, because outward purification leads to inward purification. Renew wudhu' each time it is broken.
  7. Give daily sadaqa, or charity, even if it is something small. If you don't find a poor man near you, you can set the money aside till you find one.
  8. Say farewell to your family members, asking them to pray for your success, to forgive you for any mistakes, especially your wife, and advise them to do their daily prayers early at the beginning of the recommended time
  9. Don't waste time on your way to work. Take a useful cassette with you, or a walkman, to keep you away from neglectfulness, especially when you are bored of reading and prefer to listen. Holy Qur'an is recommended if you are comfortable with that. In any case, never listen to forbidden things like singing
  10. Choose a specific Dhikr, a word or words of praise, to fill your time. 'Surat at-Tawhid', 'La Ilaha illa allah', and 'Allahumma salli ala Mohammed wa ali Mohammed' are good examples to repeat again and again. After some time, you will find it ridiculous to say things that don't bring any benefit either in this world or the Hereafter!
  11. Keep a useful book at your workplace to read in your free time. In general, the believer should always have a valuable library with a variety of books at all levels, including women and children's books, to encourage himself and others to read.
  12. Try not to pleasantly chat with neglectful people, especially of the opposite sex. Unnecessary talking and joking are means to fall into more dangerous problems. It is prudent to consider before opening our mouths whether or not we are saying something which satisfies Almighty God..
  13. Carry a schedule of prayer times with you, to perform Salat Ad-Dhuhr, the Noon Prayer, which has a distinctive position amidst the swarm of daily business, at the beginning of its time, no matter how busy you are. You should take general permission from your boss in advance to perform your prayers on time. Make the quality of prayer your chief concern rather than its length!.
  14. Perform Istighfar, seeking forgiveness, 70 times after Asr or Afternoon Prayer, so that Almighty God might forgive 700 of your faults! Read Surat Al-Qadr 10 times, so that you gain the reward of everyone's good deeds that day! Seeking forgiveness, in fact, is the main and constant concern of the believer, especially after an act of disobedience. Istighfar after Afternoon and Night Prayers are two important points, 12 hours apart, that cause the believer to live in continuous purity.
  15. Try to contact some of your brothers in your free time, not just for fun, but to achieve the goal of communication with believers and pleasing their hearts.
  16. A major problem of sitting with neglectful people is backbiting and insulting others. Try to avoid starting any conversation regarding other persons. Listening to backbiting, as well, is another form of participating in it! Remember the analogy in the Holy Qur'an which considers this act like eating your dead brother's flesh. What a disgusting act!
  17. Enter your home with a smile on your face, leaving work's tension outside, to avoid disappointing your wife who is waiting for you in love from early morning, preparing food and comfort to share with you..
  18. Consider lunch a divine table at which you are a guest. Don't forget the manners of the same, like being in a state of purification (ablution), eating Halal food, saying Basmala before starting, thanking God after finishing, and other narrated manners in this regard..
  19. Check the important news and useful programs during relaxation time, like after lunch. It is necessary to share in the concerns of Muslims, as the one who spends his day not caring about Muslims' affairs is not a real Muslim! The supplication of al-Faraj is no doubt one way to hasten this nation's rescue and relief..
  20. Taking rest after lunch is recommended to relieve the stomach and help digestion. Meanwhile, keep your mind busy with silent prayers or with what you have to do after waking up. Controlling thoughts and imagination is a great door opened towards success!.
  21. Try to do your shopping and outside duties in the times when there is less of a crowd and mixing between sexes, like in the afternoon. Avoid the markets that are well known for heavy crowds and the mixing of sexes, especially when you have no necessary duties there. Markets are the most hated places to Almighty God, and the most hatred people to Him are those who go there the earliest and leave the latest!
  22. Make a special program for the Maghreb or Sunset Prayer. Do not go to a place where you will miss this prayer at the beginning of its time. That would be an uncompensated loss, no matter how much material profit you otherwise gain!
  23. The time before sunset is a blessed time. Take advantage of the last quarter an hour to send Salawat or blessings upon the prophet and his Family, may God's peace and blessings be upon them. In addition, you should say the Istia'adha ten times, and other Tasbeeh recommended for this time..
  24. If you don't succeed in performing the daily Nawafil of 34 raka'as, you should at least perform Salat Al-Ghufaila - between Maghrib and Isha'a prayers- a special prayer said to lead to Paradise, and the Watira prayer after Isha'a prayer. Do your best to attend congregational prayers in the mosque, if there is one close to your house. ..
  25. If you find yourself in a good spiritual condition after prayer, try to stay in this condition as long as you can, whether in the mosque or at home. Such Divine gifts might not be easily repeated, being the most precious in the existence. If after some time you get used to living in such conditions, you will be living in a state of spiritual tourism that can never be compared to tourism of the material world.
  26. Take your dinner early, and make it light so that it won't prevent you from waking up for the Night prayer..
  27. You should have an organized program for useful reading. Read books according to a schedule, to finish a course of study in doctrines, exegesis of the Qur'an, history or Hadeeth, in addition to your academic or professional books. Random reading will not improve your culture!
  28. Spend enough time with your family and children. Guide them to useful narration and warn them about issues of concern, like the bad effects of the Internet and satellite channels. You can gather your family to read some of the Islamic laws according to the scholar who, you believe, is the most knowledgeable one at this time..
  29. Schedule one day or more in the week to accompany your family to a garden, a park or the like to entertain them. Try to be happy and gentle, and avoid all kind of disturbances. Never take them to suspicious places where they would be subject to forbidden looking and mixing. Avoid also visiting suspicious restaurants, which might sell you non-Halal food as Halal!!!.
  30. So much of our lives are lost in front of TV, watching everything whether it is good or bad! Just as the believer is careful about what he eats, in the same way he should be careful about what he sees! We will be questioned about the useless things we watch, and needless to say the forbidden things! You must be sure that TV is not a source of corruption to your family while you are away from the house, by using protection codes. Keep away from Internet if there is a possibility of falling into forbidden acts, especially when you are alone, in the middle of the night, or when your desires are stirred..
  31. Try to make family visits useful, and avoid going to mixed meetings or neglectful people's houses. If you have to, like for some social reason, do it carefully and quickly, so that your good intention won't end with a forbidden deed! Be cautious to isolate women and men during these visits, as per the instructions of Ahlul-Bayt, may God's peace and blessings be upon them. So many prohibited relationships with women, even married women, have started through such mixed visits, with unlimited chatting and joking.
  32. Try to go to bed early, unless you are unable to sleep, for otherwise you might be charmed by delusions and bad thoughts. It is possible that some types of thinking may drag you into forbidden acts, whether in bed or after waking up..
  33. There are some narrated recommendations before going to bed, like saying Tasbih Az-Zahra'a, saying Surat At-Tawhid three times, the last verse of Surat Al-Kahf to make you wake up for the Night Prayer - along with preparing an alarm to help you in that -, sleeping in a state of wudhu' or ritual purification, asking Almighty God for forgiveness, sleeping on your right side facing the direction of Qibla, and so on.
  34. The hours of sleep should be controlled, because people normally sleep more than they really need, especially on weekends and holidays!.
  35. Night Prayer, a conversation with Almighty God, is one of the most important worshipping stops, especially in the darkness and with emotional communication. Wake your wife and family members for this stop as well. If you cannot perform it completely, don't miss the three raka'as of Shaf'e and Witr directly before Fajr Prayer. If you even missed this, then compensate for it sometime during the day to show Almighty God your persistence in getting closer to Him..
  36. Maintaining ties with relatives does not necessarily mean visiting them. If there is any negative religious influence amongst them, it would be best to ask about them through a phone call!.
  37. Staying in a good health is something that is recommended by the religion. Try to have a suitable athletic program, without going to suspicious places and participating in prohibited acts. It is recommended, rather, to have such program at home, while listening to something reminds you about Almighty God..
  38. You should have an exceptional program for the eve and day of each Friday, repeating salawat upon Mohammed and his Family, may peace and blessings be upon them, whispered prayers, visiting the sick, visiting the graves of the believers, and other useful programs. The Supplication of Kumai is also a main feature on the eve of Friday, and the Supplication of Nudba and the ghusl or ritual shower of Friday are main features during the day on Friday..
  39. Seasons of special devotions should be prepared for in advance, through referring to the related books in this regard. It is also important to perform the prayer of the first day of a Hijri month, to obtain security for the entire month. Its method is to recite Surat al-Hamd one time followed by Surat al-Tawhid thirty times in the first rak'a, then recite Surat al-Hamd once and Surat al-Qadr thirty times in the second rak'a. Follow the prayer with the recommended supplication, and give charity for the month..
  40. It is very important for the worshipper to devote time in recollecting the tragedies that befell the Holy Family of the Prophet may God's peace and blessings be upon them. The worshipper should especially recollect the tragedies that occured to Imam Hussein and his Family, may peace be upon them, even if it is only once per week. If it is not possible for him to participate in public majlises, then these can be obtained through recordings, and perhaps he will be able to gain an understanding of the event and listen to the observance. It is important not to neglect performing the ziyarat of Imam Hussein, may peace be upon him, on Thursday night. It is one of the opportunities for success, even if from a distance.
